Strategy offsite

Strategy offsite at sea

Half-day strategic sprints with certified facilitators. Mornings on the whiteboard at the dock and case work, afternoons under sail. A format for a team of 8-20 directors planning the year ahead.

Format

Strategy offsite at sea: the format

A strategy offsite is a format for the C-suite planning the next 12 months. Not a 'trip to nature' and not a classic offsite. It is dense half-day sessions with a facilitator — on the water and in a meeting room at the dock — compressed into 2-3 days. The approach is borrowed from tech companies: OKR planning, premortems, parallel pathing, decision frames.

The morning slot is strategic work. A certified facilitator (often an MBA with 10 years in a Big Four firm or tech) runs the session against an agreed agenda. Whiteboard, flipcharts, a video call with those who could not travel. C-suite level — no slide-deck theatre, just direct conversation about priorities, budgets and restructuring.

The afternoon slot is sailing. After lunch the team heads out to sea for 4-5 hours. This is not entertainment but part of the format: the conversation carries on in an informal setting, no shoes and no ties. Decisions that would not come in the meeting room are often born on deck. We see it 7-8 times out of 10.

Dinner ashore is the third slot. The certified facilitator stays with the group, helps lock in the day's decisions and prepares a summary for the next morning. By the end of 2-3 days the team has a documented action plan for the year, signed by every participant. No 'we'll discuss it back at the office'.

Case study · 2025

Eighty partners, one regatta, Côte d’Azur.

A top-tier European law firm marked its centenary on the water: eight chartered yachts, three days of friendly racing, NDA-compliant logistics, and a closing dinner ashore. We delivered under a single contract and a single point of contact for the managing partner’s executive assistant.

Three days at sea changed how the leadership team works together. We’ll be back next year.

FAQ

What buyers ask us most.

Eight questions we receive every week from HR directors and CEOs. Not finding yours? Drop us a line — we reply within 24 hours.

How does a strategy offsite differ from team building?
Team building works on group dynamics. A strategy offsite works on decisions. They have different goals, different participants (only the C-level comes to a strategy offsite) and different formats. Clients often book both — but not at the same time.
Who are the facilitators?
An MBA plus 10 years of practice in tech, consulting, a Big Four firm or Big Tech. All have worked with C-suite-level teams for at least 5 years. Specialists in OKR planning, M&A integration, organisational design. We match them to the agenda.
What about confidentiality?
A standard NDA is signed before the start. All materials (whiteboards, documentation, video recordings if needed) stay on EU servers. After the session we can delete everything on request. Teams from Stripe, Klarna and Deutsche Bank work with us — it is standard practice.
How much does it cost?
From €3,200 per person for 2-3 days. The figure is higher because of the facilitator (this is their day rate), the premium catering and the meeting room. For a team of 10 that is around €32K — the level of an ordinary offsite consultation with a Big Four firm.
What team size works?
8-20 people. Below 8 the format loses its point — a two-day board call is easier. Above 20 strategic decisions get lost in the noise, so it is better to split into 2 parallel sessions.
Where is the meeting room?
At the dock — a separate conference room in a hotel or yacht club. Whiteboard, projector, video call, flipcharts. If the team wants to work on the water, a yacht of 60+ feet has a saloon that converts into a meeting room.
Can it be combined with team building?
It can, but we do not recommend it for the C-level. A strategy offsite demands dense concentration; team building works to relax the group. If you want both, it is better to run them a quarter apart. Many clients do exactly that.
How do we book?
Press 'Get a brief' above. A discovery call with the CEO/CHRO is the standard first step, because the facilitator is matched to the agenda. We come back within 24 hours.
